Ongoing community program

Amka Nawi

Art opens the door. Dialogue moves us forward.

Amka Nawi brings film, local creativity and community conversation together to support adolescent girls. Led by Dada Mkubwa, the program creates spaces for people to reflect on child marriage, girls’ education and their shared responsibility for safety and wellbeing.

More than a film screening

Girls’ opportunities are shaped not only by what they know, but also by the families, schools and communities around them. Amka Nawi invites those generations into respectful, locally led conversations, making room for listening as well as reflection.

Building on Dada Mkubwa’s L-Care mentorship work, the program extends support beyond adolescents to their wider community. Its pilot design combines a public launch with six village-based screening and dialogue events, using learning from each gathering to inform future work.

Part of a wider movement

Nawi Film Initiative

Dada Mkubwa is an official Impact Partner of the Nawi Film Initiative. Rooted in work in Turkana and connected to wider advocacy and community partnerships, the initiative turns the film’s message into action for girls’ education and protection. Amka Nawi contributes through locally led awareness and dialogue in Kwale.

The wider initiative’s four areas of action

Education infrastructure

Building and expanding learning spaces where girls can continue their education.

Education support

Helping girls at risk of child marriage access learning and stay in school.

Protection and recovery

Supporting girls facing forced marriage with pathways to safety and care.

Family and community action

Engaging families and communities to support girls’ education and challenge child marriage.

Initiative overview adapted from the official Nawi website.

The community gathering

Watch. Reflect. Take the conversation home.

01

Begin with local creativity

Music, poetry, spoken word and dance welcome people into a shared space, with local artists and young creatives helping make the gathering accessible and engaging.

02

Experience the story together

A screening of NAWI opens a conversation about child marriage, girls’ education and the choices available to young people. The film is a starting point for reflection—not a substitute for local voices.

03

Listen across generations

Facilitated discussion invites adolescents, parents, caregivers, teachers and community leaders to connect the story with their own experiences, challenge harmful norms and consider how to support girls.

04

Carry the conversation forward

Where appropriate, gatherings share information about support and referral pathways. Community reflections and feedback help shape future activities and strengthen locally led action.

From the launch to the villages

Parents, boys and girls—watching together

At a village screening, Amka Nawi brought parents, boys and girls together to experience NAWI in a shared community space. The gathering connects the film’s themes with the people whose everyday care and choices shape young people’s lives. These photographs document one village event, alongside the separate launch gathering.
